Do you know what are the causes of dark circles under the eyes? How to remove dark circles under the eyes? Here are 10 tips on how you can treat these dark eye bags once and for all!
When we look at what contributes to dark bags under our eyes we can see that late nights, scrubbing off your makeup with inappropriate products, and staring at computer screens under fluorescent light – are all great contributors to the dark circles under eyes.
It appears that as we get older, the more stubborn those circles can become!
Some of us are more inclined than others too dark circles, and frequently there is a family history, so there is a genetic tendency to the darkening of the skin.
Another cause is that as we get older, the layer of the skin becomes thinner, so under the eyes we start seeing some thin blood vessels, which can make the area look dark.
Additionally, if you get dehydrated, the skin can get hollow and then it reflects light differently, and this usually is seen as overstated darkness under the eyes.
But don’t despair! The dark circles around the sensitive area of our eyes can be treated. Here are 10 great tips to treat your dark circles under the eyes.
1. Hydration
The first simplest act one can do to start the process of ridding yourself from dark circles under eyes is to keep hydrated. Drinking a sufficient amount of water is one.
Keeping the skin hydrated with a good hydrating eye cream is the next step. It will leave the skin moist and reduce inflammation.
Creams that have no preservatives and contain niacinamide which soothes the skin and glycerin are the ones to go for.
A suggestion:
Toleriane Ultra eye cream by La Roche-Posay
2. Watch Out For Irritating Products
It is possible that your dark circles could be caused by your current cosmetics.
Another cause of low-grade irritation or inflammation of the skin could be something you are allergic to. Some serums for the face could be irritating to the eye area.
Is it time to try a new eye cream?
3. Protect Your Skin From Computer Screens
It is well-known that computer screens emit a long wavelength of light that can cause pigmentation of the skin.
Dark circles under the eyes area are most prone to get affected – yet most people tend to “forget” and not put sun cream! (I mean really…when was the last time you put sunscreen to go to the office?)
It is important to put some SPF cream around the eye area. Neutrogena’s Sheer Zinc face cream has Zinc Oxide in it that is recommended exactly for this.
A suggestion:
Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50
4. Try Retinoids
In order to stimulate collagen in your skin and thicken the skin around the eye, it is recommended to use creams containing retinoids.
In time, when using retinoids in that area, you should have slightly firmer skin and fewer dark circles under the eyes.
Important note: Retinoids can be quite irritating, so you need to make sure to use a low percentage in that area and keep the skin well hydrated. You may not be able to tolerate retinoids every day.
5. Get Your Sleep
A good night’s sleep lowers cortisol which can damage your skin. When you get plenty of sleep your skin definitely reflects that!
6. Eat a Healthy Diet
Salty foods cause puffiness and alcohol dry out your skin – so avoiding these will be very beneficial to the sensitive skin under the eyes.
Any healthy foods filled with antioxidants are highly recommended. Rainbow fruits, vegetables are a really good idea.
As it is well-documented antioxidants “switch off” free radical damage – which breaks down our collagen and the skin scaffolding – so a diet rich with antioxidants is what you need to help you get rid of dark circles under eyes.
7. Choose a Great Concealer
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer
Concealers with a yellow hue are the best at hiding dark circles under eyes, according to some dermatologists.
Using a light-reflecting concealer can be very beneficial when you want to use makeup that is not too heavy or too light around the delicate skin around the eye area, as these can make your skin look grey in that area.
A Suggestion:
Charlotte Tilbury’s under-eye concealer – is popular mainly due to the fact that it has a hydrating stick on one end and a light-reflective concealer on the other.
8. Check Your Hands
Do you have acrylic nails? It may be the cause of some skin irritation around your eyes, and inadvertently cause dark circles under eyes.
If you get itchy or sore eyes when you get your nails done, it might well be that you are allergic to the nail products being used.
9. Use a Good Eye Makeup Remover
Neutrogena Oil-Free Gentle Eye Makeup Remover
It is recommended that a gentle, delicate product for removing your eye makeup be used.
Oil based makeup removers are usually better as they take off the makeup without stripping the skin too much and they usually contain less preservative.
Don’t try to get every scrap of makeup off with the makeup remover, you may strip the skin all the more. Additionally, be cautious not to use alcohol-based toners as they can dry your skin out.
In order to get the last remnants of makeup, you can use some mineral water sprays.
10. Cosmetic Procedure
Some people can opt to have cosmetic procedures for circles under-eyes “bags”. There are Hyaluronic acid injections as fillers for that area.
But you must make sure you are in good hands because it is a tricky area to treat. Sometimes fillers can cause some swelling.
There is another option called light micro-needling of the area and this can be also effective and encourage collagen and as you can imagine, it has a lower risk than having fillers put in.

Thank you for your tips. I didn’t know the damage computer screens can cause. I am looking at a computer screen around 10 hours a day. I have never heard of using sun screen to help protect myself. I have thought of using glasses specific to reduce the lightwaves effect but might have to try sunscreen and see.
I have come to realize how important staying hydrated is and reducing sodium is to the body. It is good to know it cn help reduce dark circles too.
Hi Michael, thanks for dropping by.
Glad to be of assistance to you and many others who also sit in front of computers many hours a day and have “no clue” to the damage this can do to their skin – as well as their eyes! Fluorescent light is also on nasty little “major” causer of skin dullness and stress.
Keep hydrated and use sunscreen!
Cheers – Orion
Normally, I can use vegetables and fruits found in my kitchen to help reduce the dark circles under my eyes. Cucumbers, lemons, potatoes, and even tomatoes are natural skin lighteners that hydrate, remove puffiness, and draw toxins out of my skin so I don’t have raccoon eyes! And, they just feel refreshing!
I am interested in the concealers you mentioned. Since I am always on the go, I need a good concealer to remove the last vestiges of dark eyes before any public appearance.
I have a few questions, though.
Since I have pale skin, what shade of the Maybelline Concealer do you think I should use?
I sometimes work 12-hour shifts. Do you think Charlotte Tilbury’s Under Eye Concealer will soft and brighten my eyes for the entire shift? Or, will it start to dry out and show creases?
Marty
Hello Marty, Yes! We all have great vegetables that can help us out in a natural way to treat our dark circles under the eyes. More importantly, it would be good were we to ingest them, in an enough quantity to provide our body all the nutrients it needs so we would not get to this state in the first place! =)
Anyway, my 10 tips give guidance how to treat the situation and in doing so to your question Maybelline Concealer comes in a neutralizer shade for extreme dark circles, or the brightener shade for a luminous touch. What you would need to use afterwards is your regular makeup (foundation) to give your face an overall even look. If you don’t like using makeup on your face (like me) then some loose powder blending out from the eye area to even out the tones of the skin, could do the trick.
You could use the complementing product to this: Instant Age Rewind Protector Finishing Powder which is an Anti-aging powder with SPF 25 + antioxidant that shields and protects and sets the makeup. This does come in several shades – so you can choose what suits you best.
As for your long shifts, I would stick to the Maybelline ‘combo’ – as it might give you longer coverage over the time frame you are talking about, Charlotte Tilbury’s Under Eye Concealer is a wonderful product for ‘women on the go’ and is lighter – so it would mean ‘retouching’ will be needed!
Hope this helps you out. I am here if you have any other questions =)
